Based in London, James Lyndsay took his first job in IT more than 20 years ago, working at IBM in a tiny team designing and testing chips. He’s never had a better office. He formed Workroom Productions in 1994, and has been an independent test strategist ever since. James first worked on an agile team in 2002, combing strategy with hands-on testing representing the customer. Since then, he’s participated in agile projects as a consultant, mentor, and trouble shooter, most recently taking a seat as an exploratory tester (once again, representing the customer) in June-July 2007. He’s spent plenty of time with non-agile teams, and remains flummoxed by the term ‘Agile Testing’.
Having coded since 1981, James has forgotten most of what he once knew, but currently writes rather poor code in combinations of PHP, unix scripts, and ActionScript/Flash. He feels this gives him access to many powerful tools, but primarily allows empathy with the frustrations of professional coders. James was an internal irritant to the ISEB exam process for five years, is a regular speaker and occasional teacher, and runs LEWT (the London Exploratory Workshop in Testing). He sings with the London Bulgarian Choir.
