I am an experienced developer working on Data Management projects like data warehouses and data migrations using Ab Initio. Around 2 years ago, I was introduced to Agile and I have been hooked ever since. Very early on, I realised that the Agile technical practices were not very well developed for Ab Initio or any other ETL/Data Management language many people felt that Agile was not for them as a result. I have been working hard ever since to understand dust off my Object Oriented programming skills and, apply the well documented practices of TDD and refactoring and understand how to adapt them to my own technical domain.
Part of this effort was to start a company in partnership with a colleague in order to concentrate on Agile. We have pioneered the application of TDD for Ab Initio working on real projects and I wrote a framework called FIT4Data to support it. Having proved the approach works and has wider appeal, we have released FIT4Data under the GPL so the community can benefit. To this end, I hope to present my experiences at this year’s conference and demonstrate FIT4Data.
I am not aware of many other people who are active in Agile Data Management at the moment so I am very proud to be breaking new ground and enthusiastic about providing thought leadership in this area. In addition to this conference submission, I am planning a number of talks in the UK about Agile Data Management including a recent talk at the “NakedAgilists” conference “in your own bathtub” (http://www.nakedagilists.com/) and I have also started blogging at http://adrianmowat.blogspot.com to explore Agile Data Management issues in technical detail.
